Abstract

This research investigated adjective clause errors commonly made by the students in their essay writing. It involved third-semester students as the research subjects. They were from a class of students currently studying in the English Language Teaching program Department of English atuniversity in Malang. In collecting the data the researcher gave a writing task (essay) that has been done online through WhatsApp and e-mail. The data were analyzed using the Surface Strategy Taxonomy expressed by Dulay et al (1982). The result revealed eight types of adjective clause errors that the students made in their essays. It showed that from the total of 57 data in adjective clause errors a total of 30 (52.6%) data are the absence of verb which is the most dominant error type 10 (17.5%) data are the absence of adjective connector 5 (8.7%) data are subject-verb agreement error 4(7.01%) data are errors in double subjects 3 (5.2%) data are errors in double verbs 2 (3.5%) data are errors in double adjective connectors 2 (3 5%) data are misused of punctuation of comma. Only 1 (1.7%) data is wrong adjective connector errors. In conclusion the absence of verb from their adjective clause sentences was the most common error made by the students in this study.
