Abstract

Extensive reading is a way of teaching reading in order to make students enjoy reading in English. One of the learning strategies that can be applied to perform extensive reading is self-directed behavior strategy. The potential of implementing self-directed extensive reading as a habit on smartphones can be enhanced as the technology has grown rapidly to help students to achieve their goals. This study was a survey as the instrument used to find out students rsquo experiences perceptions and preferences of self-directed extensive reading on smartphones. The research used a close-ended questionnaire that consisted of 20 questions that was distributed via Google form and was able to gain 102 research subjects. They were ELT students at Universitas Negeri Malang that already passed Extensive Reading course focusing on ldquo Folk and Fairy Tales rdquo . This results show that ELT students have various experiences in self-directed extensive reading on smartphones. They also show various perceptions as well as their preferences.
