Abstract

Abstract Researchers have shown that engaging students in peer feedback can significantly affect their writing skills. However in the Indonesian context the implementation of peer feedback was not widely used at the junior high school level especially for bilingual classes. Bilingual students tend to be more fluent in English since they speak two different languages in their daily teaching activities. However their writing ability was not as good as their speaking ability because most of the students were asked to write without receiving feedback for revisions. Some teachers usually lack time to guide students in helping them write well. Therefore this study investigates peer feedback as a strategy for junior high school students in learning to write a narrative text. This study aims to describe the implementation of peer feedback to improve students writing skills. This study was conducted at SMPN 2 Sumberpucung in Kabupaten Malang using Classroom Action Research (CAR). Twenty-four students were taught using peer feedback during five weeks of peer feedback activity. There were also additional meetings to conduct the peer feedback activity after school. The students writing skill was assessed using pretest and post-test to determine whether peer feedback could effectively improve students writing skills. The findings show that the students writing improved because 80% of the students gained scores gt 80. The mean of the pretest was 67 17 while the mean of the post-test was 85 41. It was improved by at least 18 points or above. Thus it can be concluded that peer feedback effectively improves students writing skills by applying the three stages of peer feedback activity pre-writing while writing and post-writing. Based on the findings it is suggested that the teachers use peer feedback strategy in writing class.
