Abstract

This study aims to discover the Marxist portrayal of social conflict and oppression in The Maze Runner (2009) novel by James Dashner. These issues are analyzed using literary theory through conflict theory by Karl Marx and reveal the form of oppression using the theory of oppression by Iris Young. The researcher analyzes the social conflict elements in the novel and thus continues by revealing the form of oppression. Based on the Marxist theory of social conflict this novel is divided into two classes oppressor and oppressed group. Thus it is continued by the explanation that conflict occurs in this novel because the oppressor believes that this experiment is worth a sacrifice to preserve humanity. However the research steps they take result in human oppression and the annihilation of human lives. This further demonstrated Wicked s inhumane treatment of the young people chosen as the experiment s participants. The inhumane treatment by the oppressor is seen in several forms of oppression. Based on the theory of oppression by Young forms of oppression in this novel are divided into four 1) exploitation (forcing children to become their property and objects for their experiments) 2) Selective Marginalization (only victimizing powerless children and depriving them of their freedom) 3) powerlessness (the oppressed are powerless due to the control and manipulation by the oppressor) 4) violence including dehumanization (killing children who are not eligible and cannot survive from the research variables given) and making the oppressed suffer
