Abstract

Often times critics are preoccupied with deciphering thematic themes instead of looking at narrative even though it plays a significant role in a novel since novel is in the form of narrative. This paper aims to break down the narrative structure in One Hundred Years of Solitude in terms of the narration of approximately one hundred years into 422 pages. This study is conducted based on Gennette rsquo s analysis of narrative structure. This study is elaborated in an explication approach. There are two aspects of the structure from the connection between story time and narrative time narrative duration and narrative frequency. Narrative duration breaks down the duration of story time and narrative time. There are four types of narrative duration in One Hundred Years of Solitude summary pause ellipsis and scene. Each classification might imply the importance of the narrated events. Narrative frequency deals with the repetition of similar narratives or events. There are four types of frequency in One Hundred Years of Solitude repeating singulative iterative and multiple-singulative. Each kind of narrative frequency plays a role in telling the narrated events from a different perspective.
