Abstract

George Orwell rsquo s Nineteen Eighty-Four often stylized as 1984 is a story about Winston Smith living in Oceania a totalitarian superstate which oppresses its citizens with mass surveillance and harsh punishments. 1984 itself is a work of fiction from the perspective of an Englishman in late 1950s. This paper proposes the idea that 1984 is not just a fiction. This paper discusses the fictional aspects of 1984 and compares them to real-life situations according to the making of this paper in 2022. Many have researched 1984 by analyzing its extreme political ideology or the representation of 1984 rsquo s characters in current socio-political climate. However there is an important aspect of 1984 that not many researchers are conducting study of that is the existence of Telescreen. This device is used for propaganda and surveillance. A device that is not at all strange because it is similar to devices in real life such as smartphones and CCTVs connected to the internet. Because of that this paper will discuss two problems how Telescreen is used as a propaganda and surveillance device and how Telescreen as a concept available in real life. Although 1984 is a work of fiction it is shocking how realistic some of the aspects are. And unfortunately it is a bleak type of fiction.
