Abstract

This current study aims to investigate ways parents can facilitate the development of receptive and expressive language skills of their children. Specifically this study is set out to answer three research questions 1) to what extent do parents understand receptive and expressive language 2) what can parents do to support the development of receptive and expressive language skills of their children and 3) what are their views on the importance of teaching receptive and expressive language to children By adopting a descriptive qualitative approach this current study collected data from three mothers on their personal experience in raising their children using online interviews. The results obtained are mothers even when they did not have enough understanding of receptive and expressive language they maintained a very good instinct and responsibility in facilitating their children rsquo s language development and communication skills. Regarding the common ways of stimulating children rsquo s receptive and expressive skills these mothers generally practiced question and answer in everyday verbal interaction so that their children can understand commands as well as provide relevant responses and/or express their thoughts and feelings.
