This research aims to discover the kinds of conflict encountered by the main character ndash Katniss Everdeen and to examine how suspense is created through the conflict. This study applies a structuralism approach examining a film as a set of patterns and structures. The data of this study is derived from a film entitled The Hunger Games 2012. This study focuses on depicting internal and external conflicts. Kenney s theory of conflict is employed to determine the two types of conflicts and the suspense element is analyzed based on Cowgill s theory. This study reveals that Katniss encounters internal and external conflicts upon reaching the main character s goal. Her conflict causes a rise in action and increases the suspense through foreshadowing and unexpected complications
