This study aims to explore the representation of background cultures based on the linguistic levels of code-mixing and motivations for language choice and mixing in Okky Madasari rsquo s novel entitled Entrok from chapter one to five. This study was designed as a descriptive qualitative study. The data found in the form of Indonesian-Javanese mixed utterances were analyzed using Suwito rsquo s (1998) levels of code-mixing and Bhatia and Ritchie rsquo s (2013) motivations for language choice and mixing. Based on the data analysis there were 160 mixed utterance takes form of words (136 utterances) phrases (8 utterances) clauses (2 utterances) baster/hybrid (1 utterance) repetition/reduplication of word (11 utterances) and idioms (2 utterances). The characters rsquo use of mixing practices are motivated by participant roles and relationships situational factors message-intrinsic factors and language security.
