Abstract

Code-mixing is a phenomenon between bilingual and multilingual. Most people in Jakarta can speak more than two languages such as Indonesian and English. The topic of this research is code-mixing that occurs among young people especially in Jakarta. This this study aims to analyze the different uses of code-mixing between North Jakarta and South Jakarta through social media WhatsApp. This study applied the qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in the form of descriptive text and pictures. In order to guide this study the researcher used Hoffman rsquo s theory to find out the types of code-mixing and the reasons respondents used code-mixing when chatting via WhatsApp. In this study the researcher took a sample of five respondents from North Jakarta and five from South Jakarta comprising ten respondents. The data collection technique used by the researcher in this study is observation interviews and documentation. There are differences in the use of code-mixing types where North Jakarta uses more variations while South Jakarta only uses intra-sentential. The result of this research is there are twenty-nine code-mixing conducted by the South Jakarta group while nineteen times were carried out by the North Jakarta group. The researcher found once intra-lexical type code-mixing used by the people in North Jakarta.
