Abstract

This article is a psychoanalytic literary criticism of Holden Caulfield the main character of The Catcher in the Rye (1951) who constantly feels lonesome and in need of others. The purpose of this study is to understand the reason why Holden satisfies his feeling of loneliness by being a catcher to children. By analysing Holden rsquo s feeling of loneliness which comes in the form of his opinion of others and himself and referencing J. D. Salinger rsquo s biography I find that Holden is a portrait of Salinger rsquo s feeling of loneliness which originates from his childhood loneliness and stays with him even until the time he starts writing Catcher. Salinger rsquo s feeling of loneliness is caused by the absence of his father as a protector and a giver of parental love and attention during his youth. The conclusion of this study is Catcher is Salinger rsquo s subconscious expression of loneliness and Holden rsquo s heroic act of being a catcher to prevent children from ldquo falling rdquo is a form of satisfaction which unbeknownst to the author originates from his youth which lacked care and appreciation.
