The present study aims to analyze the discourse of campaign debate and the communication style of Joko Widodo (candidate 01) and Prabowo Subianto (candidate 02) in the second 2019 Indonesian presidential debate. This study applies a qualitative method in analyzing the debate content including using the analytical method proposed by the Functional Theory of Political Campaign Discourse by Benoit (2015) as the basis of the framework. This study analyzes the performance of candidates in the debate in accordance with two axioms of the theory. The findings show that the debate has followed the functional discourse proposed by the theory. Both candidates utilize the use of discursive strategies (acclaim attack and defense) topics (policy and character) and sub-topics (past deed future plan general goal personal quality leadership ability and ideal). However there is a slight difference in results with the use of acclaim by candidate 01. Further both candidates utilize different communication styles candidate 01 favors using acclaim and defense to establish preferability while candidate 02 chooses to use acclaim and attack.
