Abstract

It is known that rhetoric has been used by many speakers to create an effective speech. It is also believed that Aristotle rsquo s theory of three rhetorical proofs Logos Pathos and Ethos becomes an important aspect of creating a logical and persuasive speech. However some speakers may find it difficult to consider which of the following proofs should be used more frequently to create not only effective but also persuasive speech. This research is aimed at finding rhetorical proofs in Michelle Obama rsquo s speech Enough is enough using Aristotle's theory of three rhetorical proofs Logos Pathos and Ethos. The researcher used descriptive qualitative methods in this research. The researcher then made a list of all utterances consisting of three rhetorical proofs logos pathos and ethos and utterances that do not consist of the three rhetorical proofs will be omitted. The results reveal that Emotional Proof (Pathos) in Michelle Obama rsquo s speech is 53% which is higher than Ethos at 38% followed by Logos at 9%. The result shows compelling evidence that emotional proof can be the key to persuasiveness and how it contributes to influencing how the audience perceives the ideas of the speaker s messages in a speech.
