Abstract

The study concerns on the student teachers rsquo dilemmas due to the discrepancies between what they learn in the English pre-service teacher education and what they practice in the teaching practicum. By exploring the student teachers rsquo perceptions the study analyzed the sources of the discrepancies that caused the dilemmas and the student teachers rsquo strategies to cope with these discrepancies. The study was conducted sequentially starting from collecting quantitative data which aimed to select the participants followed by collecting qualitative data. In the qualitative data collection phase a multicase study involving five respondents was selected. Analyses of interviews and reflections show that the dilemmas due to the discrepancies are related to classroom management teaching methods lesson planning integration of ICT into the language instruction classroom English and learning materials. The causes attributed to the discrepancies include the inadequacy of professional and pedagogical knowledge including education policies and curriculum the mismatch among the perceptions of the teacher educators mentor teachers student teachers on the implementation of professional and pedagogical knowledge and the students rsquo low motivation and low English proficiency. The dilemmas emerge not just over the student teachers rsquo insufficient knowledge and skills the mismatch of the perceptions among the stakeholders and student teachers and students rsquo low proficiency and motivation but also the student teachers rsquo motivation to be English teachers. The findings also show that the student teachers had to struggle with the dilemmas that their efforts were sometimes successful but sometimes failed. The field attachments from observation to teaching practicum in the same school are beneficial for student teachers for reflecting on the situations and finding solutions to the dilemmas during the teaching practicum. The high competence in the subject matter and in the pedagogical knowledge alone without professional commitment hardly helps the student teachers cope with the problems happening in the classrooms. Practical strategies to reduce the discrepancies and dilemmas due to the discrepancies are suggested.
