Abstract

Based on the result of preliminary study most of the students in one of elementary schools encountered problems in vocabulary mastery the students were often not interested to follow the learning process teacher rarely used a fun and innovative strategy or method during the vocabulary learning most of the students are Javanese and the students are also familiar and used to playing Javanese traditional games. Compelled by this very fact the researcher initiated to implement modified Javanese traditional games to promote Elementary students rsquo English vocabulary mastery in the school. The study was conducted at MIS Syababul Qorib located in Serdang Bedagai regency North Sumatera. The subjects were 21 fourth-graders of MIS Syababul Qorib in the academic year of 2020/2021. Collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) was applied. The researcher implemented modified Delikan to be properly played during the vocabulary learning to improve the students rsquo vocabulary mastery. The data consisted of the students rsquo involvement during teaching and learning process and the scores of students rsquo vocabulary test. The data were collected through several instruments namely the observation checklists field notes and the students rsquo vocabulary test. The Instruments had also been validated and been tried out beforehand. The study was eventually conducted in two cycles with 3 meetings were made for each cycle. The result of the first cycle was students rsquo involvement reached 65% of the students on average but it reached 78% up to 89% of the students on average in the second and third meetings respectively. It also found that the students were more exciting and enjoyed the learning process outside of the classroom in the second and third meetings compared to the learning in the first meeting. Moreover the students rsquo vocabulary mastery was quite good. The students whose scores were greater than or equal to 75 as Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (the Minimum Criteria of Learning Mastery) were 14 students (67%) while the students whose scores were less than or equal to 75 were only 7 students (33%). Even though the subject were quite good the number of students in percentage had not achieved yet the criteria of success in this study which was 75% of the students. Therefore the study was continued to further cycle. The revisions were made by considering some aspects that missed in Cycle 1 and by making some additional activities in Cycle 2. In Cycle 2 the students were full of energy and spirit during the activities especially when the students played the game with the new rules. They became more active and excited in playing the game. Moreover the percentage of students who got the score greater than or equal to 75 underwent an improvement in which 67% of the students in Cycle 1 and increased 14% becoming 81% of the students in Cycle 2. The percentage of students who obtained the score greater than or equal to 75 were 81% (17 out of 21 students). Meanwhile Students who could not reach the score 75 were only 19% (4 out of 21 students). It proved that there was a better improvement of students rsquo vocabulary achievement in Cycle 2 rather than in Cycle 1. As the problems were solved the researcher therefore stopped the action. Based on the result in this study it could be concluded that the implementation of Javanese traditional game (Delikan) assisted the students in learning vocabulary so their vocabulary mastery was improved. The game was modified to be interesting and helpful so it could make the students felt excited during the teaching and learning process. As they felt excited they were also more relaxed and calm so they could also remember and retain the vocabulary easily. The English teacher are suggested to implement modified Delikan or any other Javanese traditional games in vocabulary learning. Because the game (Delikan) has been familiar to the students and able to boost the students rsquo positive energy in learning English. Moreover for future researcher(s) are recommended to use another Javanese traditional game to be integrated and modified in learning to improve the students rsquo vocabulary mastery.
