Abstract

Online learning and teaching have been a long-term idea especially at the higher educational level. Mobile phones could be used as an alternative media since it has features that involve reading materials and reading comprehensions such as electronic dictionaries electronic journals and electronic newspapers. This research aims to examine the perceptions of the sophomore students of the Department of English Universitas Negeri Malang enrolled in the academic year 2019/2020 towards the impact of using mobile phones on their reading skill. This research is a qualitative study. The researcher asked open-ended questions via online video calls. The respondents rsquo answers were used to answer the research questions. Ten sophomore students who were currently studying in the Department of the English academic year 2019/2020 were involved as the subjects of this study. The questions were about the interviewees experience and opinions on the use and impact of online learning and teaching implementation mobile phone involvement in learning and teaching electronic dictionaries electronic journals and electronic newspapers impact on reading skills. The interviewees shared various perceptions which mostly positive regarding the use of mobile phones for improving reading skills. The perceptions were mainly for the mobile phones applications that were most likely to be used for improving reading skill such as electronic dictionaries electronic newspapers electronic journals and other electronic reading sources. Those applications were highly favorable for the interviewees because they offered simplicity. Morever they had good experiences while using this form of technology. Overall there are three issues concerning the use of technology in teaching and learning English that emerged from the findings namely the need to incorporate technology such as mobile phones in online and traditional classrooms the importance of knowing students level so that teachers can best address their needs and the need to give proper and clear instructions so that learners know what to do.
