Abstract

The social media which grows rapidly provides a lot of benefits to support the success of the English learning process one of which is Instagram. Previous research confirmed that Instagram has been widely used as a medium in English teaching and learning process in both receptive and productive skills. In speaking skill Instagram Feed as one of the features in Instagram can be used as a medium for students to do speaking practice outside the classroom. As a result the students speaking skills self-confidence and motivation improved. In addition the EFL students agreed that the atmosphere of the learning process was more enjoyable compared to traditional learning methods. This perception existed due to the flexibility offered by Instagram. The students could access Instagram anywhere and anytime and they could learn from comments from their friends and other users. Unfortunately previous research only focused on investigating the implementation of the Instagram Feed feature on students speaking skill in general aspects through the analysis of student perceptions. In response to this issue this study focuses on investigating the effect of Instagram Live Feature implementation on students speaking fluency. This effect is proven by analyzing the students rsquo speaking fluency aspect of their performance. In addition the researchers also identified the students rsquo perception to find out how they perceive the implementation of Instagram Live Feature in speaking classes. This quantitative research applied a pre-experimental design aimed at determining the effect of Instagram Live Feature on students rsquo speaking fluency. Twenty of the third semester students of the English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang were involved in this research. They consisted of 10 male and 10 female students. In nine meetings the students were required to utilize Instagram Live Feature as a medium to practice speaking outside the classroom. After nine meetings the students were also required to fill out the questionnaires distributed by researchers via google form. The students speaking performance in the pretest of the first meeting and posttest of last meeting videos were analyzed statistically by applying paired sample t-test to see the effect of Instagram Live Feature implementation. Moreover the results of student responses to the questionnaire were also analyzed statistically through Microsoft Excel. The findings of this research illustrated that the significant value of the paired sample T test analysis was 0.00 and it was lower than 0.05. H0 was rejected meaning that there is significant improvement in the students speaking achievement before and after the implementation of Instagram Live Feature. In the results of the questionnaire the majority of the students agreed that the implementation of Instagram Live Feature contributed positive impacts to the teaching and learning process of speaking. Therefore the implementation of Instagram Live Feature as a medium in speaking class is recommended to be applied for the future.
