Abstract

One of the skills in mastering English is speaking. Since speaking is a natural ability that used in communication. Dealing with this pandemic learners and lecturers cannot have face-to-face classes and it has impacted the teaching-learning performance one of which is in the English-speaking course. Furthermore this descriptive study focuses on lecturers preference in using digital platforms for teaching speaking the reasons behind challenges and how lecturers overcome several challenges. The participants are English Lecturers who join IELA and teach speaking online. They have experience in teaching speaking for many years. This study uses questionnaires based on the criteria of CALL and interview protocols based on the RASE model to obtain the data. The data are in the form of closed-ended responses from the questionnaires and transcripts of the interviews. The data are analyzed manually and labeled to form descriptions to answer the research questions. The study results showed lecturers preference in teaching speaking through Zoom WhatsApp and Google Meet. Zoom and Google Meet can help assess students pronunciation teach intonation stress and conduct in-depth discussion WhatsApp can reduce students rsquo anxiety in speaking by sending emoticon features. Furthermore the practicality criteria results were Zoom Google Meet and WhatsApp recommended for a future course. The main reason given by lecturers preference in teaching speaking online were related to the ease of using those digital platforms and the convenience of time. The challenges faced by lecturers were Zoom has time limitation WhatsApp does not facilitate communication within the group. Google Meet often expel students and lecturer could not observe students while sharing screen technical problems lack of ways to apply various teaching methods and students rsquo motivation. To overcome the issues lecturers joined their partners by borrowing their laptops using tethering from handphones. Besides recording her/his teaching speaking online combining the chosen digital platform with other applications and joining webinars or teaching practices during online learning. Whereas if the students had a connection problem they did Zoom together by coming to their friend s house. Integrating digital platforms such as Zoom WhatsApp and Google classroom in teaching speaking online in higher education is good if delivered appropriately during this situation. This study will be more comprehensive for future researchers if there are observations in the classroom. By conducting observation the researcher can gain information in the classroom and study how teachers integrate digital platforms in teaching speaking online.
