Abstract

Instagram is not only a medium for people to share photos/videos but also a medium for them to interact with each other. In interacting with each other the users also produce code-mixing especially Indonesian/English in Indonesian society. The example is Indonesian/English code-mixing phenomena in awreceh.id Instagram account. This study aims to identify the types of code mixing and its characteristics which appear in awreceh.id Instagram account by using the theory of code-mixing proposed by Muysken (2000) that generates 3 (three) types of code-mixing insertion alternation congruent lexicalization. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the characteristics and types of code-mixing. Instagram is the media that is used and the Indonesian/English code-mixing phenomena in awreceh.id is the object of the study. In collecting the data the researcher applied a purposive sampling with the criteria of (1) A post/caption/comment in awreceh.id (2) A sentence/utterance/question/interjection (3) Containing intra-sentential code-mixing. The results expose that (1) there are 3 types of code-mixing found (insertion alternation congruent lexicalization) and (2) the characteristics found are insertion (single constituent content word nested a-b-a structure morphological integration) alternation (several constituents in sequence non-nested a-b-a structure and tag-switching) and congruent lexicalization (multi-constituent non-constituent non-nested a-b-a structure bidirectional mixing and mixed collocation and idiom). It can be concluded that there are various phenomena of code-mixing in Instagram especially in awreceh.id. It is suggested that there are more research on code-mixing phenomena in Indonesian/or global society in the scope of code-mixing sociolinguistics or any related fields.
