Abstract

In learning and teaching English self-efficacy has an essential role in developing students rsquo speaking skills. This research aims to investigate English language teaching students rsquo self-efficacy levels in speaking performance and the factors affecting their speaking performance. This research was conducted at the Department of English Faculty of Letters Universitas Negeri Malang. The questionnaire was distributed via Google Form to 104 ELT students of the fifth seventh and ninth in the 2020/2021 academic year. The researcher computed the data through a 4-point Likert scale questionnaire of six variables. The study result showed that as many as 70.56 % of students have a moderate self-efficacy level in speaking performance. Based on the data a lack of confidence worry and uneasiness affected students rsquo self-efficacy in speaking ability. Most students also reported that they received persuasion from their lecturers. The study results showed that social persuasion to speak in English was still dominated by the role of lecturers.
