Since the free writing strategy has been indicated to improve students written expression speed and confidence English proficiency and fluency the present study investigated the effect of using the free writing strategy on undergraduate students essay writing skills in terms of the content reason amp evidence and clarity. The design used in this study was pre-experimental research. Seventeen second-semester undergraduate students in the English department were taught using free writing in an essay writing class specifically in the comparison/contrast essay period for six meetings. Before the treatment a pre-test was provided to the students and a post-test was administered after the treatment. The result showed a significant difference before and after applying the free writing strategy with higher means scores for students after using the free writing strategy. In terms of content reason amp evidence and clarity the free writing strategy can significantly improve students writing skills.
