Abstract

Learning language with the assistance of mobile applications has been a common activity among high school students. The friendly features in the applications are found helpful for students particularly in dealing with reading problems such as limited vocabulary bank insufficient reading sources and lack of background knowledge. According to the needs analysis of this study the reading topics found in printed coursebooks were found irrelevant for high school students in social science program as they are focus mainly on explaining natural phenomena more suitable for those majoring in natural science. Thus there is an urgency to provide reading materials which suit students in all programs offered in Indonesian high school. Further in Indonesian context applications made specifically for learning a specific language skill and appropriately developed based on the current curriculum are rare. Thus the study aimed to develop a mobile application for practicing reading by providing supplementary reading materials with suitable learning activities for students in grade eleven of senior high school. Furthermore the developed application can be used to help students improve reading exposure and reading skills. The study was conducted based on Research and Development (R amp D) framework. It started with needs analysis design and development formative evaluation and product dissemination. Each stage in this study was a collaborative work between the researcher an English teacher 34 eleventh grade students two experts a start-up practitioner a programmer a visual designer an animator and two voice over artists. Data were collected by using several instruments i.e. questionnaire and interview guide. The data collected were analyzed by using concurrent triangulation analysis. Qualitative data were used to complement quantitative data which were treated as the main data. Both data types were put side by side so that students rsquo relevant statements can be directly or indirectly quoted to support the quantitative data. The results of experts review yielded constructive feedback for the refinement of the product more specifically those concerning material development and multimedia presentations of the app. Students who tried out the product also gave positive feedback on the use of the app with results as follow general impression (82.3%) format and layout (85.7%) reading materials (84.8%) multimedia (84.7%) quiz and games (82.2%) and control and usability (84%). They were delighted with the multimedia assistance and features in the app such as videos popped-up glosses games as well as reading materials which are closely related to the topics they learn at school. They also suggested more texts and features are added into the apps so that they can learn more independently whenever they have time. It is suggested for future researchers and developers to consider several recommendations from this research. First pedagogical approach used in this application should be restructured because similar approach had been implemented in the previous product. Thus it is expected that the future product will present different yet effective way of learning reading digitally. More learning features which are more advanced and helpful for students can be created in the future product for instance reading journey tracker which is more informative than progress checker in the recent app more collaborative reading activities multimedia glosses complemented with sounds and moving pictures and so on. Further the technical issues found in this study such as installation and bombproof issues although considered minor are recommended to be addressed in the future development. Planning for sustainability of the application should also be prepared so that the improvement and usability of the application can continue in the future.
