Abstract

This study aims at identifying students rsquo strategies in using the Rhetorical Pr eacute cis. It is an old summarizing template that was introduced by Woodworth (1988). Some previous studies have been discussed this template such as Woodworth (1988) who focused on its functions forms and teaching strategies White (2017) who presented its benefits and Panggalih and Cahyono (2020) who investigated students rsquo perceptions of this template. Meanwhile the students rsquo strategies of using the Rhetorical Pr eacute cis remain unclear. For this study the subjects article setting and methods were designed to fit the current context. This study employed a text analysis study. It took place in a Critical Reading course of an English Department of one state university in Surabaya with 16 students. The data were their Rhetorical Pr eacute cis summaries and oral statements which were collected virtually. Three instruments were used in this study. They were the Rhetorical Pr eacute cis rubric the interview guide and NVivo 12 plus software. For the data analysis their summaries were inputted in the NVivo for the coding by using lsquo In Vivo Coding rsquo grouping by using parent and child nodes and visualizing process. Meanwhile the oral data were reviewed and picked based on the relevant information. Finally the written and oral data were combined for reporting the findings. Based on the aim this study identified that the students applied five strategies for writing a summary by using the Rhetorical Pr eacute cis template 1) figuring out the Rhetorical Pr eacute cis theory and some reporting verbs 2) obtaining the required information by looking at the abstract and the important section of the article 3) paraphrasing the information with their own words 4) reviewing the grammatical structures and punctuation marks and 5) finalizing the summary before the submission. From the five main findings the discussion confirmed that selecting the reporting verbs paraphrasing the information and reviewing the language use and mechanical aspects are consistent and supported by the previous theories. On the other hand the other two strategies which are acquiring the information from the abstract and particular section of the text and finalizing the summaries without any follow-up activities are not in line with the previous studies. Thus encouraging the students to read the text carefully and providing post-summarizing activities are recommended. Lastly four suggestions are given for future works. First an experimental study of using this template and following the strategies are necessary to see its effectiveness. Second a correlational study can also be done to see whether the template and strategies correlate with the critical reading skills. Third looking for another course that discusses Rhetorical Pr eacute cis for more than two meetings and assigns the students to write more than one Rhetorical Pr eacute cis summaries are better for more complete data collection and analysis steps. Fourth giving the students a newer and more complex article to encourage them to read the text carefully is also suggested. Through these suggestions it is expected that future works will give a greater significant contribution to the existing theories.
