Abstract

Self-efficacy is one of the factors that might influence on students rsquo foreign language production. Speaking as it is considered as the most provoking situation for foreign language learners held the students to feel anxious when they try to perform this productive skill. This situation frequently results in the deprived quality of students rsquo oral production and should be handled as soon as possible so that the students can avoid pessimistic self-perception and attitude towards English learning. Podcast as one of the novel technologies can assist students rsquo learning along with various speaking strategy to be implemented. This study aimed at improving EFL students rsquo speaking quality and self- efficacy level through the implementation of Podcast. This study was conducted in SMA Negeri 9 Malang and employed the classroom action research design which facilitated to evaluate the students rsquo either in their speaking performance or the self-efficacy level. This study was implemented in 8 meetings whereas the preliminary study was conducted formerly during 3 meetings. The results of students rsquo speaking product in every two meeting were compared including the result of the baseline data. There were several activities that implements Podcast to improve students rsquo speaking quality. At first conversation scripts of the podcast audio taken from VOA website were given to the students in the certain meeting. After reading the script the podcast audio was played and they also had to pay attention to the vocabulary as well as the expression related to the material in that meeting. Therefore the students would get used to identify how to pronounce the words how the speakers deliver the expression etc. The other activity was the students rsquo speaking products in every two meeting of certain topic that have also been uploaded to Anchor as one of the Podcast platforms. That activity was used to record their speaking from time to time so they can reflect on their speaking quality improvement. The results of this study revealed that students can improve their speaking quality in terms of content pronunciation fluency and delivery. The results of the self-efficacy questionnaire also showed that students who become the subject of this study experienced a shift from low to high level after the techniques were carried out. The findings of this study can also contribute several visions for English teachers on how to maximize the use of technology as well as providing a contented and encouraging learning environment to help students in developing their speaking quality.
