Abstract

In the 21st century students may easily browse some information especially to gain their learning material. Nowadays ICT has a significant impact on a social life. Children adolescents adults and even parents especially those who live in big cities usetechnology such as TV telephone social networks messages etc. According to (APJII) Asosiasi Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia survey in 2016 that 132.7 million the Indonesian consume the internet and 97.4% they use the media social application. This digital era makes the citizen easily to access the media social anytime. In 2019 (APJII) surveyed that the most popular communication application is WhatsApp (WA).Lately WA used and makes most people busy with their gadgets. It is an application designed to help people communicate in its features such as chat group video messages voice and document. All the features in WA such as mobile app WA web and desktop voice and video call end-to-end encryption and photos and video sharing are available to support education and language learning (Ishak amp Deni 2015). This study aimed to describe how the use of WhatsApp in a speaking course to know the problems of implementing WA in teaching speaking and to describe the problem solutions in implementing WA in teaching speaking to FLSP students. One of the observation functions is to investigate deeply how the application is systematically implemented in practice. The participants in this study were 50 first-year non-English department students and the lecturers. The study employed a qualitative research design. The study was conducted at the Muhammadiyah University of Malang. The instruments of the study were observation field notes interview guide documentation and questionnaire. The data analysis findings showed that the use of WhatsApp supports the development of the students rsquo speaking skills such as active participation during the learning process more accurate responses and higher learning motivation. Therefore this study has implications for educators and researchers to combine a media for teaching and learning outside of the class. However the important thing espeacially for teachers in using WhatsApp is introducing the rules to the students before the class is started.
