Abstract

Keywords reading international class program teaching techniques. This study was aimed to describe the teaching of reading at international class program at SMA Negeri 1 Bangil. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative since it was designed to describe the techniques applied the material selection the media used the assessment administered by the English teacher in teaching reading comprehension and the students perception toward the teaching techniques the material the teaching media and the assessment. The subjects were the students of XI-IA-3 of SMA Negeri 1 Bangil since it was suggessted by the headmaster and the English teacher. The data were collected by using observations interview documentation and questionaires. Then the data were analyzed. The findings of this study were as follows. First the teacher applied three-phase techniques in teaching reading pre-reading whilst-reading and post-reading techniques. Second in terms of material selection the teacher took the materials from various sources textbooks magazines newspaper internet and posters. She taught five kinds of texts descriptive report narrative expository which are defined into analytical exposition and hortatory exposition and spoof. Third the teacher used both traditional and modern media. The traditional media used were pictures whiteboard photograph and real objects. While the modern one were computer movies internet email blog and DVDs. Fourth the assessment the teacher administered were both forma and informal assessments. The formal assessment was in the form of essay tests multiple-choice tests and E-learning tests. Then the informal assessment were giving feedback reading aloud grouping and giving assignment. Based on the results of this study some suggestions were given to the English teacher of the international class program at SMA Negeri 1 Bangil the headmaster the coordinator of international class program and future researchers. The English teacher of international class program should apply more various techniques in teaching English let the students have more extensive reading activites outside the class pay more attention to new vocabulary the grammar items and also the topic of the reading texts and improve the way she administers the assessment. Moreover for the headmaster and the coordinator of the international class program they may observe the class occasionally to make sure that the teacher and the students really use English in class and also provide authentic sources of learning English such as English videos. Finally for the future researchers who may do research at the same topic they may conduct research in the international class program in terms of the use of media in teaching reading.
