Abstract

Keywords Hedges Gricean maxims the Da Vinci Code In uttering sentences people sometimes say something that represents a threat to others expectation regarding self-image (Yule 1996 61). As an upshot they employ negative politeness strategy to lessen the possible threat. It implies that the speakers do not utter what they mean directly. They tend to employ the linguistic devices that are hedges in order to be cooperative with the hearers. This study dealt with hedges that are emphasized on the dialogs of the main characters in the Da Vinci Code novel. The characters are Robert Langdon Sophie Neveu Bezu Fache Silas Manuel Aringarosa Leigh Teabing R my Legaludec Andr Vernet and Jerome Collet. The researcher picked them for they are actively involved in most chapters and in the panic situation in which mostly hedges appear. The research design of this study is qualitative descriptive. The only data are the conversations uttered by the main characters in the Da Vinci Code novel. The taxonomy of hedges between Brown-Levinson (1987) and Salager-Meyer (1997) are employed to analyze the types of hedges. Then the Gricean Maxims avowed by Grice (1975) were also utilized in order to know what kinds of maxim related to the hedges are used. In addition the mimetic approach as the grand approach in this study is operated to proof that the creative-imaginative world in literary work bears a resemblance to the real world. The result shows that from 8 kinds of hedges all of them are employed by the main characters with the different frequency of appearance. From 268 data 140 (52.24%) of them consist of modal auxiliary verbs. Then if clause (21.64%) modal lexical verbs (14.93%) adjectival adverbial and nominal modal phrases (7.84%) prosodic and kinesics hedges (1.49%) introductory phrases (1.12%) approximator of degree quantity frequency and time and compound hedges (each of them has 0.37%). When the speakers hedge their utterances they try to qualify the things they say in regards to their adherence to the conversational maxims that consist of four sub-maxims. From 268 data containing hedges most of the hedges are related to maxim of quality (103 hedges) for the main characters are faced with dangerous and risky situation so that they have to give true information based on what they believe. Then maxim of quantity takes the second place (54 hedges) since the characters are required to give the most informative information and response in order to manage the behaviour toward the problem they are facing. Next the third and fourth place is maxim of relation and manner (each of them consist of 21 hedges). They are used when the characters are obliged to give or respond information clearly and relevantly to the topic that is being discussed. Besides the story obliges them to avoid obscurity information and be orderly in uttering sentences. As the researcher took a mimetic approach as her grand approach in this study it can be concluded that from the first and the second research problems and as the mimetic theory avowed by Abrams (1971) the hedges employed by the main characters in the Da Vinci Code novel reflect the mimetic theory that is the creative-imaginative world in literary works bear a resemblance of the real world. Besides the relationship between hedges and maxims that are employed by the main characters are that they use a range of linguistic devices (hedges) to qualify the things they say in regards to their adherence to the conversational maxims. This study is focused on the types of hedges that are used by the main characters maxims that are related and the mimetic approach as the basic approach in the main characters dialogs. Therefore other studies are still needed to improve the result and the findings about hedges in this study.
