Abstract

Keywords comics comic strip Garfield and semantic change. Comics are series of drawn images (narrative) arranged horizontally and chronologically. It consists of some parts like pictures and dialogues within balloon images. Comic strips are the type of comic published in newspapers magazines or printed media. Newspaper comics are also called as comic strips. American newspaper comic strip that first appeared in 1978 Garfield is created by cartoonist Jim Davis and it has gained popularity since then. Now Garfield not only appears in comic but also in movies and games. The main purpose of comics is to entertain and the aim of creating the comic is to deliver a message could be in politics current issues human interest etc. to the readers. A study that explains and clarifies the nature of meaning is called Semantics as stated by Kreidler (1998 3) that Semantics is the systematic study of meaning. Semantic change is the change of meaning of a word. Semantic change deals with the change in meaning or the change in concepts associated with a word. A word may have a new definition different from the previous definition. This research is aimed to identify the words that have semantic changes and the frequency in Garfield comic strips and also types of semantic changes that occur in Garfield comic strips. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method from Johnson and Christensen (2004 360) since the data tend to be qualitative (non-numerical data) in the form of words and sentences. In collecting the data the researcher firstly read all the comic strips from year 1978 up to 2010 and tags the words that occur frequently for 32 times at minimum (it can be assumed that a word appear only once a year from the 32 years comic strips). Then the next step is transcribing the words based on the hierarchy from the most to the least of its occurrences. Yet the researcher takes words that have semantic changes only to be analyzed further and eliminate others. The researcher uses types of semantic changes by Hollmann (2009) in categorizing the semantic changes of the words. Types of semantic changes according to Hollmann (2009) are generalization specialization melioration pejoration metaphor and metonymy. The result shows that the words that have semantic changes in Garfield comic strips are words lazy dog rats diet dream cute and pig. The hierarchy from the highest to the least of frequency of the words are lazy (604 times) dog (377 times) rats (306 times) diet (303) dream (96) cute (80 times) and pig (33 times). There are four types of semantic changes in Garfield comic strips they are pejoration in the word lazy and cute generalization in dog and dream metaphor in rats and pig and the last is specialization in diet. Semantic changes can be analyzed from the words origin or etymology words usage and also from the history. Language has a dynamic characteristic which always develops over time along with trends and time. Deutscher (2006 6) stated that in the history of language the surprising trait of language is the continual changes of words sounds and even structures over the years. Semantic change is one of the result and evidence that language is dynamic over time along with the trends in society. Comic become a medium to carry or to popular a new word and meaning that might be used in certain community only to be widely spread to the reader. (562 words)
