Abstract

Keywords classroom interaction international standard class primary school a case study Classroom interaction is the interaction that is performed by the teacher and the students during the teaching and learning process in the classroom. It involves verbal and nonverbal interaction in the form of (1) intrapersonal (2) interpersonal (3) group and (4) cultural interactions that happen in the classroom. Interaction plays a very important role in the teaching and learning process of English learning especially when the target language should be used as the medium of instruction as what should be done in the international standard class. The aim of the study is to describe the interaction characteristics in the third grade of the International class at International Class Program at Laboratory Primary School of State University of Malang. This thesis is a descriptive qualitative study on the classroom interaction of the research subjects. The data of this study is taken from the interaction between the teacher and the learners in the classroom. In order to analyze the data the writer used Flandres Interaction Analysis System (FIAS) to obtain a clear view of the interaction characteristics that happened in the class. The steps in analyzing the data using FIAS is coding the verbal interaction that appeared in the teaching and learning process making pair categorization based on the code that have been given in the previous step applying the pair categorization in the matrix and the last is analyzing the matrix. The result of this study shows that the teacher still plays a dominant role in the teaching and learning process. The most dominant characteristic appeared is teacher talk in the form of giving direction (70.89%). The second dominant characteristic was still teacher talk but in terms of showing or justifying her authority to change the students 8223 behavior (66.30%). However the students were categorized as active as the students 8223 participation has become in the third dominant characteristic that appeared (55.17%). Based on the study the writer suggested the teacher to increase the teaching knowledge and vary the teaching technique activities and the use of media in class so that the students will not be bored. Moreover giving students more praise and encouragement during the teaching and learning process will increase students 8223 motivation in learning. For the next researcher he/she could carry out a research in the English teaching method in order to increase the effectiveness of classroom interaction in international standard class. The result of this study can be used as a basic result for the other new researches.
