Abstract

Keywords particularized conversational implicature conversational maxims politeness strategy off-record. People sometimes use utterance containing implicit meaning in communication which results in implicature. Politeness principle is important in trying to explain why people are so often indirect in conveying what they mean. The particularized conversational implicatures were analyzed based on Brown and Levinson off-record politeness strategy in doing Face Threatening Act (FTA) but be indirect and Grice Cooperative Principles in Thomas (1996) and Yule (1998). It invites conversational implicature by violation of some Gricean Maxims relevance maxim quality maxim and quantity maxim. This study focused on finding particularized conversational implicature seen in the two main characters of The Duchess movie. The research method contained analysis of the findings in which the primary data was taken from the original movie script that consists of utterances from the main characters dialogs. The research design of this study is qualitative descriptive. Since both of them do not have good relationship it is interesting to analyze their way of communicating. The results show that there are 27 utterances contained particularized conversational implicature. In the introduction there are seven particularized conversational implicatures which violate maxim of quality (28%) that functions as speaker s avoidance of face damaging interpretation maxim of quantity (14%) that was used to give the addressee the opportunity to interpret what the speaker meant without being irritated and losing face and maxim of relevance (58%) that functions to avoid the potential threat of ordering the hearer around. In preclimax violation of relevance maxim (100%) was totally used as speaker s indirect force to the hearer to agree with speaker s decision. The shifting function of violation of relevance maxim from introduction to pre-climax was influenced by problems that the speaker faced which then resulted in total violation of relevance maxim. Then there are ten particularized conversational implicatures in the climax which violate maxim of quantity (30%) to give opportunity to interpret what speaker meant without being irritated and violate maxim of relevance (70%) to overcome the most inconvenient situation. Moreover in the anticlimax the researcher found five particularized conversational implicatures which were violating maxim of quantity (20%) that functions as speaker s indirect request and violating maxim of relevance (80%) to show the speaker s authority to the hearer. Meanwhile the researcher only found particularized conversational implicature in the ending of The Duchess movie which violated maxim of quantity (100%). The decrease of conversational implicature connotes that the speaker tried to keep the convenient communication and forget all the problems in the climax and anticlimax. In conclusion the most violated maxim in particularized conversational implicature is relevance maxim. Thus by violating relevance maxim the speaker assume that she/ he will produce more satisfying outcome and less threat to the self or other. The discussion of particularized conversational implicature and off record politeness strategy becomes a central point in this study. However other studies are still needed to make a development particularly from Linguistics students in analyzing the phenomenon of conversational implicature. Hopefully this research becomes a trigger for the student to improve the result and the finding related to particularized conversational implicature in other issues and genre of conversation.
