Keywords hedges negative politeness Avril Lavigne songs 8223 lyrics People communicate with other people by using language. They try to deliver their messages by creating a conversation which can be done by talking face to face by phone and also by using songs as the tool. There are possibilities that we will find hedges in the conversation we do. A hedge 8223 according to Brown P Levinson (2004 145) is a particle word or phrase that modifies the degree of membership of a predicate or noun phrase in a set it says of that membership that it is partial or true only in certain respects or that it is more true and complete than perhaps might be expected. People tend to use hedges as a politeness strategy. There is a possibility that every communication will potentially create threats to face of both the speakers and hearers. In response to the threats people tend to use strategies in maintaining the degree of politeness on the faces of two sides. This study will focus on finding the application of negative politeness especially hedges seen in Avril Lavigne songs 8223 lyrics. Lavigne was born September 27th 1987. She is a very famous Canadian singer and songwriter. Lavigne began her career and creating songs 8223 lyrics when she was 18 years old. Through her songs she tried to deliver her messages to her hearers in order to make them understand her feelings. The research design of this study is qualitative descriptive. The study concerns on how age affects songwriter 8223 s choice of words in making her lyrics construction. The researcher will analyze only the fourteen (14) songs of Avril Lavigne album which are chosen randomly and try to find out what kinds of hedges in the songs and whether the hedges in her songs increase or decrease in her albums in every age levels. The researcher took 2 songs from each album of her 7 albums. In this study kinds of hedges seen in Lavigne songs 8223 lyrics are analyzed based on the hedges classification of Salager-Meyer (1997) and Iragiliati (2007). The result shows politeness seen in the use of hedges in Avril Lavigne songs are as follows. In the age range group 1 (16-20 years old) the hedges here had the function to express Lavigne 8223 s feeling that she wanted to be equal or decreasing the difference between gender. The hedges were modal auxiliary verb (74.42%) and modal lexical verb (25.58%). In the age range group 2 (21-25 years old) Lavigne used hedges more to show solidarity to others than expressing about her freeling forcefully. The hedges were modal auxiliary verb (70.53%) if-clause (1.78%) modal lexical verb (27.67%). In the age range group 3 (above 26 years old) Lavigne wanted to be closer to the hearers. She wanted to be one of the member of the in-group with her fans. The hedges were modal auxiliary verb (41.17%) if-clause (35.29%) modal lexical verb (23.52%). Thus the use of hedges applied in the songs 8223 lyrics will give a clear description related to politeness strategy in having conversation in social construction. Hopefully this research becomes a good start for other students to conduct other researches in contributing the comprehensive description on hedges on other issues.
