Abstract

Key word English Teaching Young Learners Outdoor Class Teaching Several studies had been conducted with the focus on English teacher s techniques in teaching English for young learners but there was no description about the implementation of outdoor English teaching in the first grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Alam Success School Center Pare. The previous studies were conducted in schools which did not implement outdoor English teaching as their school program. Some of their findings state that young learners at the age of six to seven years old are able to learn English as a foreign language. Next some of the techniques in teaching that were found were question and answer listen and repeat quizzes and games. No studies discussed the implementation of outdoor English teaching in the first grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Alam Success School Center Pare. This research was intended to describe the implementation of outdoor English teaching as the school program that was implemented in teaching English in the first grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Alam Success School Center Pare. Three components were investigated in this research the implementation of outdoor English teaching in the first grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Alam Success School Center Pare the reasons of applying outdoor English teaching and the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of outdoor English teaching in the first grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Alam Success School Center Pare. This research applied a descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this study were the English teacher of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Alam Success School Center Pare and 24 young learners of the first grade. The main instrument to collect data in the research was the researcher who was supported by some instruments i.e. field notes an interview guide and supplementary documents. The findings of this research were as follows. First the implementation of outdoor English teaching for the first grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Alam Success School Center Pare was combined with indoor class teaching. Second the time allotment of indoor and outdoor class teaching was already set up by the teacher based on the students need. The percentage of time allotment of indoor and outdoor class teaching for listening materials was 60% indoor and 40% outdoor for speaking materials 40% indoor and 60% outdoor for reading materials 40% indoor and 60% outdoor and for writing materials 60% indoor and 40% outdoor. Third the techniques that were used in outdoor class teaching were almost similar with indoor class teaching. The techniques that were used by the teacher at outdoor class teaching were question and answer practice listen and repeat read aloud sing a song play games and do a task (quiz). The techniques that were used in outdoor English teaching did not utilize the objects that were available in the nature and students environment. Fourth the researcher found five reasons why the teacher implemented outdoor English teaching. The reasons were outdoor English teaching was relax it was one of the ways to minimize the learners boredom one of the ways to present English for young learners it was appropriate with the learners character and it was one of the ways to build the learner s awareness in loving the nature. Fifth based on the findings of the interview with the teacher there were eight advantages and two disadvantages of the implementation of outdoor English teaching in the first grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Alam Success School Center Pare. The advantages were increasing the learners motivation in learning English giving a comfortable atmosphere to the learners minimizing the learners boredom giving a chance for the learners to recognize the nature engaging the learners activeness while teaching and learning process releasing the learners to express their expression as boundless as possible increasing the learners enthusiasm and omitting a perception that English was difficult. The disadvantages were it needed a lot of time in preparing the teaching and learning process and the learners attention sometimes did not focus to the lesson. Based on the result of the research the researcher suggests that the teacher should utilize the objects that are available in the nature or the environment surrounding the students as the objects for teaching and learning process. Next the researcher suggests that the teacher manage the time and the class as well as possible. Afterwards the researcher suggests the other schools which conduct or plan to conduct the same program provide sufficient facilities and techniques to the program in order to conduct the program successfully. Last for future researchers they are expected to conduct further studies to observe and analyze more deeply on the other aspects such as the students motivation in joining outdoor English teaching the effectiveness of the implementation of outdoor English teaching etc.
