Abstract

Key words songs English Habit program In order to develop students English proficiency many schools provide extracurricular activities focusing on English. SMAN 3 Malang holds a program called English Habit . It was first conducted in the year 2010. It is a compulsory program carried out once a month usually in the last Thursday of the month. The program is in the form of ten minutes activity before the regular classes. The activities include reading poem or short story writing a poem or listening to songs. In the formal interviews before the research the students pointed out that listening to songs is one of the most preferable activities in the English Habit program. The study was aimed to describe the use of songs in English Habit program at SMAN 3 Malang in terms of the selections of songs in English Habit program the kind of songs used the activities the advantages the problems faced in the use of songs in English Habit program and the students opinions toward the use of songs in English Habit program. The research applied descriptive design. It was conducted in SMAN 3 Malang. It is located at Jalan Sultan Agung Utara No 7 Malang. To collect the data this study used some instruments interview guide observation sheets and questionnaires. The data were collected from February to March 2012. The data in this qualitative research were analyzed by data reduction data display and discussion/conclusion of the data. It was found that the selection of the songs in English Habit program at SMAN 3 Malang were done by the English teachers by selecting the songs which students were familiar with and have understandable lyrics. The genre or kind of songs was always pop-song because it is well-known and easy to learn. From the observations the activities that students needed to do while listening to songs were filling gaps and vocabulary exercises. It was found that the problems in the use of songs in English Habit program were the limited time of the program that makes it difficult to explore the songs more the unmotivated students and the problem with the facility. However most of the students gave positive response toward the use of songs in English Habit program. Based on the results of the study it is suggested that the school should conduct the English Habit more often so the English teachers can prepare more various activities to avoid dullness in every activity in the program including listening to songs. Besides the teachers should be more active to encourage and motivate the students to study English especially in encouraging them to listen to songs. The last one is that the school should check the listening equipment such as the speakers in each class regularly.
