Abstract

Key Words Effectiveness Big-Book and Narrative-Scaffold Writing Narrative Texts Writing is widely believed to be the most complex and difficult among all language skills. Junior High School students have to have competence in writing several text types one of them is narrative text. In order to help learners to solve problems in generating idea for writing narrative texts teachers can use some instructional media for instance Big-Book and Narrative-Scaffold - as this present study concerns. The present study is quasi-experimental research with nonrandomized control group pretest-posttest design. The study was conducted in order to reveal the effectiveness of implementing Big-Book and Narrative-Scaffold in improving students ability in writing narrative texts whether or not the experimental group who was taught using Big-Book and Narrative-Scaffold has better ability in writing narrative texts than the control group who was taught without using Big-Book and Narrative-Scaffold. The researcher used some instruments namely writing test writing scoring rubrics and questionnaire. The students writing ability then were measured two times in the pretest and posttest. The results of students writing in the posttest from the two groups then were analyzed using ANCOVA. Then the students writing in the pretest was used as the covariate. The results of the study revealed that the mean score of experimental group was higher than the control group 86.0435 and 78.1304 respectively. Generally the experimental group had higher scores in both analytical scores and in holistic scores. In other words there was a significant difference between experimental and control groups which meant that Big-Book and Narrative-Scaffold were effective in improving students ability in writing narrative texts. Based on the result of this research it was suggested that English teachers use Big-Book and Narrative-Scaffold as the media to teach students to write narrative texts. For other researchers especially for those who want to conduct similar research hopefully they can conduct the research in different text types and/or in higher level of education. Other researchers are also recommended to conduct the further research in different areas of language skills such as listening speaking and reading.
