Abstract

Keywords black slave owner slave Jones The Known World Literature as the expression of human beings reflects life thought feeling behavior and attitude of human being. As the product of society works of literature expresses the social condition in certain place and time. In other words literature mirrors the history. In this thesis I study Edward P Jones historical novel The Known World as the portrait of the social life in the United States in the last of 19th centuries during the era of slavery. The objective of the study is to critically compare master-slave relationship between the fictional character of black slave owners in Edward P. Jones s The Known World with the real character of black slave owners in the history of slavery in the U.S. Thus some outstanding and influencing figures of black slaves owners in history of the U.S. will be studied as the comparison to the fictional character in the novel Henry Townsend. This study specially focuses on how both characters real and fictional who formerly were slaves develop into the slave owner how they form their initial mindset about slavery how they treat and interact with their slaves and how they establish their social status and economic success as the slave owners. This study argues that some slave-born black master might have some benevolent motives before and during their masterhood although their main purpose of owning and employing slaves is not different to other masters that mostly dominated by the white masters in that era.
