Abstract

Key Word lexis lexical quality Mathematics bilingual textbook. Living in globalization era The Ministry of Education and Culture has started to upgrade Indonesian s Sekolah Standar Nasional (National Standard School) into Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional (Pioneering International Standard School) with the materials delivered in English. For this purpose some of the book publishers publish their textbooks in bilingual (Bahasa Indonesia and English). In relation to this matter the researcher found the need to have a study about the lexical quality of translation of the bilingual textbooks. The aim of this study is to know the lexical quality of translation used in two bilingual Mathematics textbooks for Senior High School specifically in lexical aspect for it is can be considered as most important aspect with upmost priority need to be preserved appropriately regardless of the original text forms field of work topic and media. The design of this research is qualitative because specifically in this matter the research was to evaluate the lexical quality of translation of bilingual textbooks. Two bilingual Mathematics textbook was evaluated in this research with both Indonesian and English as its language provided together with Indonesian as its source language and English as target language. The bilingual Mathematics textbooks used are for first grader of senior high school for first semester entitled Mathematics 1A and 1B for Senior High School by ESIS and Matematika Bilingual untuk SMA kelas X Semester 1 2 by Yrama Widya. Data gathering of this research was done by listing the Mathematics contextual dictions from the aforementioned bilingual textbooks. The data obtained after the data collection is 228 items of contextual diction where 130 items are from first textbook and 98 items are from the second textbook. The data analysis process is started by (1) initial comparison and (2) definition cross-reference. From the first data analysis the researcher found that out of 130 items from the first bilingual textbook six of them are inappropriately translated. On the other hand in the second bilingual textbook seven out of the 98 contextual items are inappropriately translated. Yet after the second data analysis definition cross-reference the inappropriate contextual items from each bilingual textbooks reduced by two leaving only four inappropriate items in the first bilingual textbook and five items in the second bilingual textbooks. After the calculation first bilingual textbook s lexical quality level is 96.92% and categorized as Excellent while the second bilingual textbook s lexical quality level is 94.90% and categorized as Good . With these quality levels the two bilingual Mathematics textbooks provide qualified translation which will not confuse their users even though there are still some mistranslations in lexical level.
