Key Words bilingual program conversation class. English is the language used for global range. English is used in numbers of aspects such as technology and education. Mastering English will be useless without the mastery of speaking. Some schools including SMPN 2 Malang have established a conversation class for bilingual program students as a media for the students to practice their speaking skills. This study was conducted to describe the implementation of teaching English in the conversation class at SMPN 2 Malang. There were five variables included in this study namely some classroom activities conducted in the conversation class materials and media used in the conversation class the description of the students speaking problems and the students solutions to overcome the problems. The setting of this study was Grade VIII i of bilingual program with twenty-seven students in that class as the samples for this study. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative design. Field notes the headmaster and the English teacher s interview guidelines and the students questionaires were the instruments used to collect the data needed. The findings of this study were as follows. The first telling story news reading blind date games role-play and watching movie were the classroom activities conducted in the conversation class. The second finding was that the materials used in this conversation class were funny stories news text about current social issues in Indonesia and a movie. The third was that a whiteboard and a movie were used as a media in this class. The fourth finding is related to the students speaking problems. The problems varied from linguistic up to psychological problems. The last finding showed the students efforts to overcome their speaking problems. The strategies used by the students to deal with their speaking problems were paraphrasing approximation the use of gestures asking help from the English teacher and the use of native language. Based on the result of the study it is recomended that the English teacher be more careful in selecting the classroom activities for the class. To SMPN 2 Malang it is better if the school eshtablishes a conversation class as an intracurricular activity not only for the students of bilingual program but also for regular students to motivate all of the students of SMPN 2 Malang in improving their speaking abilities. The last suggestion is given to other researchers. It is expected for them to conduct other studies to investigate other elements in the conversation class.
