Abstract

Key Words lexical richness narrative text Vocabulary is considered as the building of block language. A large number of vocabulary will help learner to understand various text book. However rather than only possessing numerous passive vocabulary knowledge foreign learners are expected to have a large number of productive vocabulary also. This productive vocabulary will enable learners to be actively contribute to the use of language rather than becomes the consumer of language use. This study is descriptive research which tries to reveal the lexical richness of senior high school students in narrative text. It also aims at comparing the lexical richness of male and female students compositions. The subject of the study is XI graders of Madrasah Aliyah Bertaraf internasional (Pre-International Standard School) Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 3 Malang. The class consists of 12 male and 18 female students. The researcher used a writing instruction for the students to write a 300 word composition of narrative text. The thirty students compositions are included in the RANGE computer program to see the lexical frequency profile as which indicates the composition lexical richness and implies the students productive vocabulary knowledge. The male and female students are grouped separately before included in the RANGE computer programs The result of the study shows that from 9.000 word tokens 1.061 word families are found 578 words (54.48%) in base list 1 210 words (19.79%) in base list 2 40 words (3.77%) in base list 3 and 233 words (21.96%) are not in the list. Therefore the lexical frequency profile is 54.48%-19.79%-3.77%-21.96%. It implies that the students used mostly 2 000 most frequent words in their composition. It indicates that the students still have low productive vocabulary knowledge. The male and female students also share similar frequency profile. The male lexical frequency profile is 65.06%-16.39%-3.80%-14.56% while the female students composition profile is 59.40%-18.57%-2.82%-19.18%. Both of male and female students use the 2 000 most frequent words repetitively. They use a small number of academic words. It proves that both male and female still have low productive vocabulary. Based on the result of this research it was suggested that English teachers pay more attention to the growth of productive vocabulary knowledge. For other researchers who concern with similar issues it is expected that they can conduct the research in large number of students at different level of education to see the students development of productive vocabulary.
