Abstract

Keywords reading strategies eleventh graders English texts The need of reading keeps increasing but ironically most high school students still find it difficult to read and understand English text well. The reasons may vary but how the students read should be observed for it could be one of factors hindering their success in reading. In line with that this study was intended to investigate the students reading strategies in their attempts of understanding of English texts. This study is descriptive qualitative in nature for it is limited to find out the reading strategies employed by eleventh graders when reading an English text. This study was conducted in SMAN 8 Malang as one of international pilot schools in Malang. The subject of this research was 35 students of class XI IPS 2 academic year of 2011/2012. To collect the data a Likert-type questionnaires consisting of 25 items were used. The reading strategies were identified under three headings namely pre-reading whilst-reading and post-reading. An interview involving ten participants was then conducted to clarify the responses of the questionnaires. The data analysis was done simultaneously with the data collection so once the data was ready the analysis was also completed. From the results of data analysis some conclusions were drawn. During pre-reading phase the most frequently used strategy was reading the title as well as looking at the illustration and then anticipating the texts content while the least employed strategy was reading the first sentences of each paragraph to understand the general idea of the text. The other strategies that were commonly utilized by the students on this reading stage were thinking of background knowledge then correlating it with the text topic and also skimming the text to get the gist. In other words students seemed to rely much on activating their schemata to help them understand the text. During whilst-reading phase students were familiar with most of the reading strategies. The most frequently used strategy was looking up dictionary to find out the meaning of important words whereas the least used one was reading without checking up every unfamiliar word in dictionary. Guessing the meaning of a word from its grammatical category and paying attention to particular words or phrases that indicate the text structure meanwhile were never used by the students. The reasons on the ineffective use of those reading strategies could be due to their lack of knowledge on word category conjunctives transition signals coordinating conjunctions etc. that show how the writer organizes his or her ideas and also due to their reluctance to employ the strategies. As for the post-reading phase the most commonly used strategy was rereading the text to remedy comprehension failures. Grouping the newly found words according to their meaning or grammatical category and summarizing the main ideas of the text were used only by few students. Furthermore the students appeared to never use re-reading the text to remember important points from the text. The students might skip the strategies during this phase because they do not want to spend more time on them. Based on the conclusion it is recommended for the teachers to introduce the reading strategies and regularly practice them in classes to make students more familiar with them and are able to use them effectively. It is also recommended for future researchers to identify the differences of reading strategies among high average and low achievers to figure out which strategy helps comprehension better. Besides Think-Aloud Protocol needs to be applied to clarify what reading strategies are really employed by the students.
