Abstract

Keywords English conversation classes materials frameworks evaluation. English conversation classes are particular classes that focus the attention on the development of speaking skills. It administers a special language environment where all students are expected to talk and respond in English without being afraid of doing so. The study aims to describe the English conversation classes at SMA Negeri 8 Malang focusing on the framework and the evaluation of the materials used. The research applied descriptive-case study research. There were 89 students of special classes (X5 XI Science 2 XI Social Studies 5) selected as the subject of this research. Those classes were selected based on the teachers recommendation. To collect the data this study used some instruments they were school documents interview guides and questionnaires. The data of this research was from the aim of materials used in English conversation classes and how the materials were evaluated. The data were collected in March 2012. The data of this research were analyzed by categorizing describing and synthesizing. From the finding it was found that the materials used in English conversation classes were developed by topic-based framework they were science-based and social based topics. Science-based topics were science classes while social-based topics were social studies classes. The evaluation of the materials was conducted by the teacher from each grade. Generally there was no special meeting in evaluating the materials because of several reasons English conversation classes materials based on science and social-based topics were the new concept so the teacher was still developing the materials and it was difficult to find the perfect time in evaluating the materials they have made. The students opinions toward the materials used were generally positive. Most of them said that it was useful for other related subjects at the school. Based on the result of the study it is suggested that the teachers should hold a workshop in compiling fixed materials handbook for students. Besides the teachers should hold an evaluation meeting at least every month as a communication media among the English conversation classes teachers.
