Abstract

Key Words feminism sexism geisha Memoirs of a Geisha Arthur Golden novel. This thesis questions whether Arthur Golden s most praised novel Memoirs of a Geisha is a sexist novel. By using the feminist perspective in closely reading the novel the thesis proves that this novel does not represent sexism it can be seen through the narrative character and characterization. There are several sexist attitude and statements represented in the novel ranging from superstition against women virginity test for women mizuage abortion to women as property and commodity to be sold. However most of the sexist attitude and statements in this novel are opposed and challenged by the characters although some minor portion is not. The opposition takes the form of character attitude and statements against them. This suggests that the novel is far from condoning any sexist attitude and statements and thus sexism in general.
