Abstract

Key Words teaching English fifth grade students This study aims to find out about the teaching of English to fifth grade students at SDN Gondang to answer several statements of problem as follows What are the teaching techniques used in the teaching of English What are the media used What are the materials used How does the teacher carried out the assessment process What are the problems that the teacher faces in teaching English This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were one teacher and 42 students of fifth grade at SDN Gondang Plosoklaten Kediri. The researcher acted as the key instrument. The data were collected using field notes camera checklist and interview guide. The results of this study described the process of the teaching of English to fifth grade at SDN Gondang Plosoklaten Kediri. The results indicated that during the observation the teacher used four kinds of teaching techniques question-answer listen and repeat drilling and giving exercise. The teacher used games and songs as the instructional media. The material presented came from the workbook. The teacher applied two kinds of assessment to assess the student s learning testing instruments and non-testing instrument. Testing instruments covered doing exercises homework midterm and final exams at the end of semester. While the non-testing instruments includes student activity and participation such as reading aloud to the class and answering the questions of the teacher. In addition there are several constraints faced by the teacher. They were management of large classes and limited media to support students in learning English. Based on the above explanation it is advisable that the teachers vary the teaching techniques to create joyful learning English that is not monotonous. The lesson plan should be arranged in order to help the teacher reaches the goal of the teaching. Besides it is suggested that the teacher make creative instructional media. Also the teacher may try to add the source of instructional material from other sources which are relevant to the topic. For further research it is recommended to conduct further research on the development of syllabus instructional materials and instructional media development.
