Abstract

Keywords Speech style Type of Speech Presentation. Speech style is one of the elements that cannot be separated in our daily communication. For different topics different purpose of talking everyone talks with different styles although he or she talks about the same thing (Holmes 2001). It means that speech styles are important to use when communicating with others. This study is concerned with discussing speech styles related to four types of speech speech to entertain speech to inform speech to stimulate and speech to convince in TIENS multilevel marketing presentation. In detail this study aims to answer two research problems (1) what types of speech are used in the presentation (2) what speech styles are used in each types of speech The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The primary data is the written form or the transcription of the utterances from the presenter s speech. In this study the researcher applied Nababan s theory (1993) of speech styles which are divided into five categories gaya or ragam beku (frozen) gaya or ragam resmi (formal) gaya or ragam usaha (consultative) gaya or ragam santai (casual) and gaya or ragam akrab (intimate) supported by Abdul Chaer s lexical and grammatical characteristics for standard Indonesian theory (2000). Besides the researcher also used theory about types of speech from Monroe (1962). This theory is used to help the writer to analyze the speech based on the purpose. The result shows that from 184 data the researcher found that there are four types of speech and three speech styles used in the presentation. From the most dominant used are speech to stimulate (41.30%) followed by speech to inform (30.98%) speech to convince (22.82%) and speech to entertain (4.89%). In each type of speech the most occurrence of speech style is consultative style (51.08%). The others are casual (26.08 %) and formal styles (22.82%). In conclusion the use of speech styles is influenced by two things. First it is influenced by the purpose of the speech. The presenter always suits the speech styles with the purpose of his or her talks because all the speech styles have their own characteristics especially related to the syntactical construction and diction used. If the presenter makes a mistake in choosing the appropriate speech style to use it will make the message of his or her speech not delivered as it is intended to be. The audience will not grasp the message well so that the purpose of the speech could not be achieved. Second the choice of the speech style is influenced by the setting and the dimension of formality of the occasion. When the presenter has decided what he or she is going to talk he or she must know the setting first. So that he or she can use or choose the right speech styles that make his or her speech interesting for the audience.
