Abstract

Keywords Rhetorical Devices A Series of Unfortunate Events Weird. Many children in the world are familiar with a children story that mostly starts with once upon a time and ends with happily ever after . But they will not find such kind of story when they read A Series of Unfortunate Events. Do not ever think of a happy ending in this story as it was not even happy since the beginning. However this book is one of the best seller children books ever. Lemony Snicket the author has a unique strategy to spice the story up by using rhetorical devices. This study is discussing the rhetorical devices used in A Series of Unfortunate Events the operation of the rhetorical devices and some issues associated with the operation of rhetorically devised expressions. The research design of this study is qualitative-descriptive. The data are in the written form which are taken from the first second and twelfth series of the book. The data were collected through document analysis. The researcher found categorized discussed and summarized the data. After the data were collected the rhetorical devices are categorized based on phonological morphological syntactical and pragmatic features. Phonological features used in this series are alliteration assonance and consonance. Morphological features used are backcronym neologism and reversed words. Syntactical features used are anastrophe anaphora and conduplicatio. And the last the pragmatic feature used is reverse psychology. After that the researcher discussed the operation of rhetorical devices in the story and some associated issues. As the result rhetorically devised expressions that are overused create a weird image in terms of language usage in the story. It makes the weirdness become a commodity to sell for young reader. It is not all about bad impacts for selling the weirdness yet it gives the young readers more choice for their literary preference genre. The researcher hopes that the results of this study will contribute to the teaching and learning process either in literature or linguistics courses for example prose and discourse analysis course. She also hopes that writers can be inspired to use rhetorical devices or other innovative devices. In addition the study of rhetorical devices in A Series of Unfortunate Events should be given a deeper analysis especially for the whole series as they consist of many more attractive devices.
