The novel written by Arundhati Roy an Indian female writer tells about the life of dzygotic-twin siblings Rahel and Estha and their childhood hard life. In addition to expose the life of the siblings the novel pictures on the social life and the culture of India also. This thesis mainly argues that The God of Small Things somehow similar to Hansel and Gretel and Romeo and Juliet. The comparison appears obviously in several characters setting and plot of the novel by Arundhati Roy. This research is implemented to explore the comparison involved in the novel of The God of Small Things. The analysis employed Formalist Criticism. Formalism itself is a term that only analyzes the form of certain literary work. The comparison foundthe similarities and the differences in the characters plots and setting in two story of TGOST Rahel Estha and Ammu Velutha to Hansel and Gretel and Romeo and Juliet. The similarities that is found leads to a metaphor which shows the message of satire to criticize a message and Irony. The analysis shows that the comparison between Rahel Estha and Hansel Gretel is the metaphor of the condition in each story to represent the post-war situation and a challenge against patriarchy. In Ammu Velutha and Romeo Juliet the metaphor itself brings the message from the comparison of Romeo and Juliet is that love is the greatest feelings than any other feelings. Life can be built by love that is why love cannot be blamed especially in Ammu-Velutha and Romeo-Juliet cases.
