Abstract

Ahda Zahrah Zakiya. 2013. Using Students Recorded Video to Improve Learning Motivation in Speaking Activity. Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Drs. To be able to communicate properly students are expected to master the four language skills especially speaking. The preliminary study on the eight graders of SMP N 1 Deket Lamongan shows that the students face some problems in speaking. Most of the students had low motivation to speak up in speaking activity because the technique that was used by the teacher was only asking the students to memorize a dialog and perform it in front of the class. The students thought that English was difficult because they had to memorize the conversation and the students were shy to perform it in front of the class. To overcome the problem the researcher implemented students recorded video to improve their learning motivation in speaking activity. This method was chosen because it can help the students overcome their shyness and motivated them to speak up. 12288 12288 12288 12288 This study adopted the Classroom Action Research (CAR) design proposed by Kemmis and Mc Taggart (1988). The research was conducted in one cycle consisting of three meetings. Each cycle consists of four stages planning the action implementing the action observing the action and reflecting on the observation. The subject was the 8E class of SMP N 1 Deket Lamongan which consisted of 34 students. The data were the students motivation level that was measured using several indicators (1) the students focus to the lesson (2) the students are active in doing discussion and responding to the teacher s questions (3) the students show high diligence and enthusiasm in doing every activity (4) the students are confident in stating their opinion and trying something new and (5) the students are courageous to ask whenever they find any difficulty in the learning process. The data were taken from the students and the English teacher by means of observation checklist field notes interview and questionnaire. The data were analyzed through qualitative method compared with the criteria of success and presented descriptively. 12288 12288 12288 12288 The results of the study show that the use of students recorded video successfully improve the students learning motivation in speaking activity. The students learning motivation increases from 21 2% (in preliminary study) to 76 5% (by the end of cycle 1). In this study the researcher used the video that was made by the students as the media in speaking activity and conducting discussion session. Based on the result of this research it is concluded that the use of students recorded video can improve the students learning motivation in speaking activity. It is suggested that other English teachers can apply this method to overcome the speaking problem faced in classroom. In addition future researchers are also suggested to implement students recorded video by modifying it to suit the different grades and levels of education to see whether or not this method can be implemented effectively.
