Ali Saukah M.A. Ph.D. Key words English textbook English in Focus communicativeness The implementation of Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP) offer flexibilities to teachers to implement any strategies and methods materials kinds of media and evaluation techniques in their teaching as long as learning objectives are reached. However in the case of English teaching those flexibilities should be in harmony with the approach of language teaching. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is the foundation of English language teaching. Students communicative competence should be stimulated either using appropriate strategies and methods materials or activities. In this study the focus is on the material in the form of textbook entitled English in Focus for Grade VIII of Junior High School wether it adequately fulfills the characteristics of a communicative textbook. A communicative textbook is different from a traditional textbook. It possesses some characteristics. In this study the textbook is analyzed based on two categories communicative components and communicative activities. The communicative components consist of 11 components such as the aim the topic and subject content the reflection of students needs and interest shown by the textbook the appropriateness of grammatical materials the appropriateness of vocabulary exercises the appropriateness of pronunciation materials the organization of conversation the stylistic difference the quality of authentic materials the quality of semi/non-authentic materials and last the availability of cross cultural understanding aspect. Meanwhile the analysis on activities is conducted by analyzing each activity in the textbook whether it fulfills some principles of communicativeness such as language use or communication real context unpredictability information gap interactiveness and beyond classroom principles. The study used content analysis method. To analyze the components and also the activities of the textbook the researcher used two kinds of checklist adapted from previous researchers and some experts. Each checklist has range of score. The score ranged from 0 1 and 2. The scores obtained by using those checklists were calculated by using certain formulas. The study revealed that the level of communicative components of the textbook was classified into good category since the level of communicativeness was 80%. Meanwhile on the contrary the level of communicativeness of the activities was only 20% which meant that the level of communicativeness of activities was very poor. Overall the researcher concluded that the quality of communicativeness of the textbook is poor. Thus the researcher suggested that teachers use supplementary materials. Then authors of textbook should consider the communicativeness of materials they write by providing more communicative activities for example.
