Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Dra. Sri Andreani M.Ed. Keywords reading teaching techniques elementary school 12288 12288 12288 12288 12288 In this globalization era students should have the ability to compete at international level and this requires English skills. One of the important English skills the students need to master is reading. The role of teacher is very important in helping the students to master the skill. They need to use appropriate techniques in the teaching of reading in the pre-reading whilst-reading and post-reading stages to achieve the goals of the teaching and learning. 12288 12288 12288 12288 12288 This study was aimed to describe the teaching of reading to the fifth grade students of SDN Yosowilangun Kidul 01 Lumajang. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative since it was designed to describe the techniques applied by the English teacher in teaching reading at pre-reading whilst-reading and post-reading stages. The subject was the English teacher of SDN Yosowilangun Kidul 01. The observation was done on 1 8 and 15 May 2013. The data were collected by using subject identification form interview guide both for interviewing the teacher and the students observation checklist documentation recording the teacher and students interaction and field notes. Then the data were analyzed based on the related theories. 12288 12288 12288 12288 12288 The findings of this study show that the English teacher conducted the teaching of reading in the three reading phases. In the pre-reading stage the teacher introduced the text discussed the vocabulary and activated background knowledge. In whilst-reading phase she applied rereading. In the post-reading phase she used post questions and gave feedback to the students. It was also found that the teacher intonation was not clear. It made some students have difficulties to understand what she said. The materials used by the teacher were also limited and the lesson plan that the teacher used was not appropriate to conduct in her class. It seemed that she used other teacher s lesson plan since the theme activity and course book stated in her lesson plan was not relevant with what she did in the classroom. 12288 12288 12288 12288 Based on the findings of this study some suggestions were given to the English teacher of SDN Yosowilangun Kidul 01 the principal and future researchers. The English teacher should apply more various techniques in conducting each stage of reading comprehension make her own lesson plan find more materials from other resources use more instructional media and pay more attention to the students problems and find the way to help them. For the principal it is suggested that the school provide varied materials for reading e.g. English story books and English children magazines so that the students can enhance their reading skills and develop their reading habits. Finally for the future researchers it is suggested that they do research on other aspects of the teaching of reading at the elementary school level.
