Abstract

Key Words errors simple past tense recount text. This study investigates the errors in using simple past tense in recount texts written by the eighth graders of SMP Lab UM. Most of the students consider writing as the most difficult skill of all. Therefore the students often make errors particularly when they use simple past tense in writing recount texts. This study was conducted under the consideration that simple past tense plays an important role in writing a recount text. The problems of this study are what dominant errors in recount texts written by the eighth graders of SMP Lab UM are and what types of errors that occur in using simple past tense in recount texts are. The purposes of this study are to find out the dominant errors in simple past tense in recount texts made by the eighth graders of SMP Lab UM and to find out the types of errors that occur in using simple past tense in recount text. The population of this study was the eighth year students of SMP Lab UM in the academic year of 2011/20012 which consisted of six classes they were 8A 8B 8C 8D 8E and 8F. The total number of the population was 185 students in which 28 students were chosen as the samples. Cluster random sampling was used to collect the data to represent each class so that they were all well represented. The samples were 15% of the whole population to collect the data. The instrument used is a writing task consisting of an outline in writing a recount text. In analyzing the data error analysis is used in which there are five steps they are identifying the errors classifying the errors calculating the errors putting the result in tables and the drawing conclusions. Finally the result of the analysis shows that there were 11 types of errors. They are omission of to be as many as 9.46% wrong form of to be as many as 13.96% wrong form of infinitive to as many as 1.80% addition of to be (before and after verb) as many as 6.76% wrong form of verb as many as 53.60% wrong form of modal auxiliary 6.31% omission of verb 0.90% wrong form of negative sentence as many as 2.25% wrong form of question sentence as many as 0.45% omission of subject pronoun as many as 2.25% and wrong form of subject pronoun as many as 2.25%. It is concluded that the dominant errors lie on the wrong form of verb in the students recount texts whose proportion of the errors is 53.60%. Based on the result of the research it is suggested that the eighth graders of SMP Lab UM should be given intensive exercises on the correct structure of simple past tense in their writing. The teacher also should give feedback on the students recount texts.
