Abstract

Key words techniques teaching vocabulary young learners. Today the role of English as an elective local content has become a compulsory one. It is proven by the educational activities in the elementary schools where English is given. The purposes of teaching English in Elementary School are to introduce the language and prepare them in junior high schools where English is more complicated. It is hoped that when they enter junior high schools they have been familiar with English. This study is focused on the techniques used in teaching vocabulary to young learners at SDN Sumbersari 2 Malang. Based on the preliminary observation the students reactions to English language were enthusiastic. They seemed to be interested in learning English. When they understood the lesson they were happy and felt that learning English was important. One thing that impressed the researcher was when the teacher asked the students about what they had learnt in the previous meeting most of them still remembered it well. This research was done in SDN Sumbersari 2 Malang to look at the English teaching and learning process especially the techniques used in teaching vocabulary to young learners. This study employed a descriptive design. The source of the data was the English teacher and the subjects were the students of grade 1 up to grade 6 at SDN Sumbersari 2 Malang. The instruments used to collect the data were checklist field notes interview guide and HP/camera digital. The data were collected for two weeks which consisted of five steps observing the teacher interviewing the teacher making field notes using HP recorder for interviewing and using digital camera to take pictures. The data taken from the observation and interview were analyzed and presented in the form of descriptive explanation. The findings revealed that the teacher applied various techniques in teaching vocabulary. In teaching grade 1st 2nd and 3rd the teacher used listen and do listen and repeat question and answer in pair or group discussion modeling and demonstration brainstorming outdoor activity singing song and using picture. While in teaching grade 4th 5th and 6th the teacher used listen and do listen and repeat in-pair or group discussion question and answer modeling and demonstration concept mapping game and using picture. From the result of this study the researcher suggested that the teacher improve the activities or give more various activities in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. For the headmaster it is suggested that she pay more attention for the English teacher and help the teacher follow the training of teaching techniques of English. The researcher suggested that the next researchers could conduct research about the teacher s proficiency in teaching English to young learners.
